In a heartbreaking development, the search for missing Los Alamos National Laboratory worker Melissa Casias has come to a tragic conclusion. Authorities have confirmed that remains discovered in a New Mexico national forest belong to the 53-year-old, who vanished under mysterious circumstances last year.

The New Mexico State Police reported that a hiker stumbled upon the remains in the McGaffey Ridge area of the Carson National Forest, not far from Taos, the city where Casias lived. Alongside her remains, a handgun was found, prompting further investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. As of now, the medical examiner’s office is working to determine the cause and manner of death, but no conclusions have been reached yet.

Melissa Casias was last seen on June 26, 2025, after visiting her daughter. When she failed to return home or show up for work, family members grew concerned. They later discovered her personal itemsโ€”such as her ID, purse, and cell phonesโ€”abandoned, raising alarm bells about her safety. Surveillance footage reportedly captured her walking alone along a highway, wearing a backpack, which only deepened the mystery of her disappearance.

Casias was not the only employee of the laboratory to go missing in 2025; she followed the case of 78-year-old Anthony Chavez, who disappeared in May. Both cases are part of a larger investigation involving at least ten missing or deceased individuals connected to sensitive scientific research, with the FBI now leading inquiries into potential links between these incidents.

In a statement shared through the social media page dedicated to her case, the family expressed their grief and determination for justice. “We confirm that the remains found in Rio Chiquito are Melissa,” they wrote. “This is a lot to process, our hearts are heavy, and we fully intend to continue to pursue answers for justice.”

As the investigation into her disappearance continues, the community is left grappling with the loss of a beloved member. What led to Melissa Casias’ tragic fate, and what answers will emerge as the investigation unfolds?
