The case surrounding 19-year-old Stephen Smith continues to raise questions nearly eight years after his mysterious death in South Carolina. Smith was found dead in the middle of a rural road in July 2015, and authorities originally ruled the case a hit-and-run. However, the investigation later shifted toward the possibility of homicide, especially after increased public attention connected to the powerful Alex Murdaugh family scandals.

Lawyer Believes Stephen Smith's Killing Was Hate Crime

During the interview, attorney Eric Bland clarified confusion surrounding evidence recovered from Stephenโ€™s electronic devices. Former investigator Steve Peterson claimed Stephenโ€™s phone had already been unlocked years ago and suggested the tablet connected to the case had been destroyed. Bland explained that Peterson was only partially correct. While the phone had indeed been accessed previously, the tablet was successfully recovered and unlocked within the past year. Investigators now reportedly have access to additional communications, including messages with people Stephen knew and dated.

Bland criticized unauthorized individuals speaking publicly about the investigation, saying misinformation had spread quickly and caused confusion for Stephenโ€™s family. He also revealed that South Carolina law enforcement still considers the case active and believes several individuals may have important information about what happened to Stephen.

Much of the discussion focused on possible links between Stephenโ€™s death and members of the influential Murdaugh family. Questions remain about whether Buster Murdaugh has any knowledge of the incident, though he has denied involvement and denied rumors of a relationship with Stephen. Bland stated that investigators should directly ask him what he knows.

The interview also revisited claims by Stephenโ€™s mother, Sandy Smith, who said she saw Alex and Randy Murdaugh near the crime scene shortly after Stephenโ€™s death. These allegations continue to fuel suspicion that influential figures may have attempted to shape or interfere with the original investigation.
