There is no officially confirmed Game of Thrones Season 9. HBO ended the flagship series in 2019 after eight seasons, and the network has never announced plans for a direct continuation of that storyline. The concept of a ninth season with Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke returning as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen exists only in fan concept trailers and online speculation, not in any verified studio development slate.
What did exist was Snow, a proposed sequel series centered exclusively on Jon Snow that Kit Harington himself pitched to HBO in 2022. George R.R. Martin confirmed the project was real, with Harington assembling a team of writers and multiple draft scripts produced. Emilia Clarke acknowledged the discussions in a 2022 BBC interview, stating Harington had told her about it and that it was happening. However, by April 2024, Harington revealed the project was off the table because the team could not find the right story to tell. HBO chief Casey Bloys later confirmed the cancellation but left the door slightly open, saying maybe we will try again at a later date. Harington has since stated he has no intention of ever playing Jon Snow again, and the idea has been completely abandoned.
A second attempt at a sequel to the original series is reportedly in early development with Quoc Dang Tran attached as a writer, though no details about cast, plot, or timeline have been revealed. HBO’s current focus remains on prequels including House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which have been officially greenlit and are in active production.
