Akon is opening up about his relationship with his multiple wives.

Although the singer, 53, has previously not shared much about his romantic life, he confirmed during a recent episode of the We Need to Talk podcast that he has multiple wives who all work together to maintain their relationship dynamic.

However, the “Beautiful” singer wouldn’t reveal exactly how many wives he has. “I’ll just leave that to your imagination,” he said when asked.

Akon shared that although he has multiple partners, he’s the “only man” in the relationship and does not allow his wives to have other partners.

He also explained that there’s a hierarchy in the relationship and that all of his wives must respect his first wife — though he did not share if that’s Tomeka Thiam, who filed for divorce from the singer in September 2025 after nearly three decades of marriage.

“That one is the reason you even got one, two or three. She’s the queen,” Akon said. “Nobody violates wife No. 1. The moment they violate, [they’re] out the door.”

According to the “Lonely” singer, his first wife is the one “sacrificing in the end.”

“With new people [joining] your family, there’s going to be new attitudes, new mindsets, new behaviors,” he explained. “And the [first wife has] to deal with that.”

Akon shared that although there can be some challenges, he believes that there are benefits for his wives in this type of relationship.

“Oftentimes when the family is united in that way, the benefit is more for the woman than it is for the man, because the man actually has to take care of all of them,” he explained on the podcast. “He has to treat them all equally, and their responsibility bears on him as well.”

Akon said that, ultimately, he believes his relationship dynamic works because of the communication he shares with his multiple wives.

“You got to be mature enough to know if this is the situation that I’m going to park in, I have to communicate,” he said. “This I like, this I don’t like. This I’m for, this I’m not for, and this is what I’m willing to deal with, this is what I’m not willing to deal with. And once y’all lay down those rules, just abide by them. It’s literally that simple.”

Akon and Thiam married in 1996. She filed for divorce from the musician on Sept. 11 last year, just four days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary.

In the past, Akon has said he believes in polygamy, and in a 2022 interview on The Zeze Millz Show, he revealed that he has nine children. Musician Amirror alleged in 2023 that she was one of Akon’s four wives.
