Mackenzie Shirilla’s father has reportedly been placed on administrative leave from his teaching position after participating in Netflix’s controversial true crime documentary, The Crash, a development that has sparked even more debate surrounding one of America’s most divisive recent murder cases.

Mackenzie Shirilla's father placed on administrative leave after participating in Netflix documentary 'The Crash'

According to reports, Steve Shirilla was removed from his duties at the school where he worked following backlash tied to his appearance in the documentary, which revisits the 2022 high speed crash that killed 20 year old Dominic Russo and 19 year old Davion Flanagan.

The documentary quickly exploded online after viewers accused the Shirilla family of attempting to reshape public perception of Mackenzie, who prosecutors described as intentionally driving her vehicle into a brick building at nearly 100 mph. The crash killed both passengers instantly while Mackenzie survived.

The case drew national attention after prosecutors argued the crash was not an accident, but a deliberate act. Surveillance footage, crash data, and witness testimony became central pieces of evidence during the trial. Investigators claimed Mackenzie accelerated without braking moments before impact, leading prosecutors to compare the incident to a “missile strike.”

In 2023, Mackenzie Shirilla was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

But Netflix’s The Crash reopened public debate around the case by focusing heavily on Mackenzie’s mental state, her relationship with Dominic Russo, and the emotional devastation experienced by both families.

Much of the backlash now centers around Steve Shirilla’s comments in the documentary.

During interviews, he defended his daughter and questioned the prosecution’s narrative, suggesting the case was more complicated than it appeared in court. Some viewers, however, reacted negatively to remarks involving Mackenzie’s marijuana use and comments they believed minimized the seriousness of the crash.

Social media quickly erupted after the documentary premiered, with many viewers criticizing Steve for participating in the series while others argued he was simply standing by his daughter during an unimaginable situation.

According to reports, complaints from parents and community members eventually reached the school where Steve worked as a teacher. School officials later confirmed he had been placed on administrative leave pending further review.

The situation has added another layer of controversy to a case that already divided the internet for years.

Supporters of Mackenzie argue the crash was the result of emotional instability, reckless behavior, and mental health struggles rather than premeditated murder. Critics, however, believe the evidence clearly showed intent and argue the documentary attempts to generate sympathy for someone convicted of intentionally killing two young men.

The documentary also reignited discussion about how true crime streaming platforms influence public opinion after convictions are already finalized. Some viewers accused Netflix of glamorizing tragedy or selectively framing details to create controversy, while others defended the series for exploring perspectives not fully seen during trial coverage.

Meanwhile, the families of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan continue living with the aftermath of the deadly crash that took two lives and permanently changed several others.

Now, even years later, the case remains one of the most emotionally charged true crime stories online, with reactions becoming even more intense after the release of Netflix’s documentary.

As public debate continues, many people are asking the same question:

Did The Crash reveal new perspective… or did it simply reopen old wounds?
