In a dramatic turn of events, Alex Murdaugh has launched a federal lawsuit against former court clerk Becky Hill, whose controversial actions during his 2023 murder trial led to the South Carolina Supreme Court vacating his convictions. The 17-page lawsuit, filed on Sunday in Charleston, South Carolina, seeks to hold Hill accountable for what Murdaugh’s legal team describes as “wrongful conduct under color of state law.” Murdaugh, a disbarred attorney still facing charges for the alleged murders of his wife and son, is pursuing compensatory and punitive damages as part of this action.
Last week, the state Supreme Court unanimously overturned Murdaugh’s double murder convictions, citing Hill’s “improper” influence on the jury as a critical factor. The justices ruled that her actions tainted the fairness of the trial, necessitating a new one.
Jim Griffin, one of Murdaugh’s attorneys, expressed the gravity of the situation at a press conference, stating, “She deprived Alex of his constitutional rights, deprived him of a fair trial, and as a result, we have to do it all over again.” He emphasized that this lawsuit aims to investigate Hill’s conduct, which has not been adequately addressed until now.
The Supreme Court’s ruling was scathing, with justices accusing Hill of engaging in “shocking jury interference” and effectively acting as a character witness for the prosecution. However, she previously pleaded guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice in December 2025, resulting in a three-year probation sentence.

Meanwhile, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has indicated plans to retry Murdaugh on the murder charges “as soon as possible.” He expressed hopes for a retrial by the end of the year but acknowledged the possibility of appealing the Supreme Court’s decision.
Murdaugh remains incarcerated, serving concurrent sentences for unrelated financial crimes, totaling 67 years. His attorney, Dick Harpootlian, criticized Wilson’s comments about the death penalty, suggesting they were politically motivated rather than based on legal considerations.
