In a surprising turn of events, former MLB All-Star Wander Franco has been granted a judicial pardon, allowing him to avoid prison time despite being found guilty of sexual and psychological abuse of a minor. The ruling from a Dominican Republic judge has left many questioning the implications for Franco’s future in baseball.
Franco, who once dazzled fans as the shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays, faced serious charges stemming from a relationship with a 14-year-old girl that began in December 2022, when he was 21. Initially convicted in June 2025, he received a two-year suspended sentence, but the recent pardon has overturned that decision.
While the court acknowledged Franco’s criminal responsibility, it also pointed to a purported extortion scheme led by the minor’s mother. Prosecutors had sought a five-year prison sentence for Franco, but the judge instead imposed a harsher penalty on the mother, who was sentenced to 10 years for money laundering and exploiting her daughter financially.
This complex case has raised eyebrows, especially as it was revealed that over $100,000 was found in the mother’s home during investigations. Reports suggest that she allegedly manipulated her daughter into extracting money from Franco, treating the relationship as a financial transaction.
Despite avoiding jail, Franco’s professional baseball career appears to be in jeopardy. He has not played in an MLB game since August 2023, following the surfacing of the allegations. His contract with the Rays, worth $182 million over 11 years, is now under scrutiny, especially since he may struggle to obtain a work visa due to the nature of his conviction.
Under U.S. immigration law, the charges against him could be classified as a “crime involving moral turpitude,” complicating his chances of returning to the field. With approximately $160 million left on his contract, the Rays have significant leverage, and they may explore options to void the deal based on morality clauses often included in sports contracts.
As Major League Baseball continues its independent investigation into the matter, the organization has stated it will wait for the legal proceedings in the Dominican Republic to conclude before taking any disciplinary action.
What does this mean for Franco’s legacy and the future of his career? Only time will tell.
