Princess Diana reportedly sent a letter to JFK Jr. shortly before her sudden death in 1997.
The letter from February 1997, sent mere months before she died, detailed how Princess Diana was worried about the paparazzi’s treatment of JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette.
According to “The Kennedys and the Windsors: The Story of Two Dynasties, One Born, One Made” by Caroline Halleman, Diana wrote,” I hope the media are leaving both you and Carolyn alone. I know how difficult it is, but believe it or not, the worst paparazzi are here in Europe!” with the word “hope” allegedly underlined. This comes as Diana’s reason for preparing Harry for the throne has been revealed.
Princess Diana and JFK Jr. met in 1995 to discuss her appearance on the front cover of “George.” He later attempted to get an interview with the mother of two, but she politely declined.
However, her letter to JFK Jr. hinted that this door wasn’t fully closed.
Diana and JFK Jr’s stories had similarities. Both were hounded by the press in the 1990s, Diana over her divorce from King Charles, and JFK Jr over his courtship with Carolyn Bessette.
All three of them would also die in tragic accidents, with Princess Diana dying in a horrific car crash in Paris.
She was part of a high-speed chase, with paparazzi following her through a tunnel in the French capital city. Her car’s driver and her partner, Dodi Fayed, died instantly. Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only survivor, though he was seriously injured.
Princess Diana survived for approximately 3.5 hours after the incident before being pronounced dead at the hospital. She had suffered major internal bleeding and could not be saved in surgery.
Two years later, in 1999, JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette would also tragically die, this time in a plane crash when their single-engine light aircraft, piloted by JFK Jr., plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, on July 16.
As the couple and Carolyn’s sister Lauren were descending, the aircraft entered a sharp right bank and plummeted nose-down into the ocean. It then struck the water at a catastrophic speed, descending at a rate exceeding 4,700 feet per minute.
Official autopsies concluded that all three occupants, whose bodies were recovered from the ocean floor, died instantly upon impact from severe multiple trauma.
Diana’s private secretary, Patrick Jephson, said that she saw similarities between herself and JFK Jr, as he said, “I think that that did create a connection between them. I wouldn’t call it a bond, but an affinity, a recognition of each other’s unusual hardships and difficulties.”
