NEED TO KNOW

  • Investigators allege influencer Gabriela Gonzalez and her father plotted to kill singer Jack Avery during a yearslong custody battle over the couple’s daughter
  • Court documents obtained by PEOPLE allege the pair discussed using Bitcoin, the dark web and a staged car accident to carry out the killing
  • Authorities say Gabby’s father Francisco Gonzalez later spoke with an undercover agent posing as a hitman and used coded language including the word “bullrun”

A social media influencer with hundreds of thousands of followers and her father have been arrested in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting her musician ex.

Gabriela Gonzalez, 24, was booked May 18 by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation and is being held without bail, according to inmate records reviewed by PEOPLE. Her father, Francisco Javier Gonzalez, 59, was arrested the same day in Seminole County, Fla., on an out-of-state fugitive warrant tied to a California charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder, jail records and a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE show.

The affidavit alleges the scheme stemmed from a longstanding custody and visitation dispute between Gabriela and her ex, Why Don’t We singer Jack Avery, involving their 7-year-old daughter.

Investigators alleged Francisco became “deeply involved” in the custody conflict and in efforts to “discredit, monitor, and remove Avery from [their daughter]’s life.”

Witnesses described Francisco as “hostile” toward Avery and “heavily invested” in the custody battle, according to the affidavit. One witness allegedly told investigators Francisco Gonzalez said words “to the effect that it would be cheaper if Avery were dead,” while another described the Gonzalez family as “obsessed” with obtaining full custody and excluding Avery from their daughter’s life.

The affidavit alleges Francisco orchestrated an extensive campaign to track and photograph Avery in Kauai, Hawaii, where the singer lives, in an effort to gather potentially damaging evidence that could be used against him in the custody fight.

Investigators said Francisco communicated with a private investigator about the alleged surveillance operation, seeking evidence that Avery was “acting in a way that could be used against him in the custody dispute.”

In another communication reviewed by federal agents, Francisco allegedly expressed an intent to have Avery arrested if he appeared for visitation, according to the affidavit.

In a family-group communication in March 2021, Francisco allegedly said it was “never too early” to contact a man Gabriela allegedly sought to recruit o threaten Avery, per the affidavit.

Witnesses told investigators Gabriela repeatedly expressed that she wanted Avery dead and discussed arranging for a hitman to kill him, the affidavit further alleges.

According to the filing, Gabriela and alleged co-conspirator Kai Cordrey allegedly discussed using the dark web and Bitcoin to carry out the murder-for-hire plot and spoke about staging Avery’s death to look like a car accident in Los Angeles.

Investigators alleged Francisco was the funding source behind the alleged scheme.

Another witness allegedly told investigators that Gabriela claimed Cordrey had been paid to kill Avery and that Francisco allegedly paid approximately $10,000 for the hit.

According to the affidavit, Francisco later sent Cordrey money disguised as payments for web-development services, though Cordrey allegedly admitted no such work was ever performed.

Financial records reviewed during the investigation allegedly showed Francisco Gonzalez sent Cordrey $10,000 through Square in April 2021. Investigators said records later showed Cordrey transferring two separate $5,000 sums into a Gemini cryptocurrency account, while other records allegedly showed a $4,000 invoice through a website called Site Whisperer.

Investigators alleged the payments were intended to conceal the true purpose of the transfers.

Cordrey also allegedly told investigators he communicated with Francisco through encrypted Signal messages and calls.

Federal agents later reviewed communications between Cordrey and someone identified in the affidavit as “Fran G.” In one exchange, “Fran G” allegedly sent the codeword “Bullrun,” followed by a missed audio call.

The affidavit also alleges Francisco Gonzalez later spoke directly with an undercover federal agent posing as a hitman.

During that call, investigators alleged Francisco Gonzalez used coded references including “bullrun,” referenced prior Bitcoin payments made by Cordrey and discussed verifying the target and arranging “payment/accountability after completion.”

Avery revealed in a September 2025 interview on the Zac Sang Show podcast that FBI agents had warned him someone was allegedly trying to kill him, though he did not publicly identify any suspects at the time.

On her Instagram, where she has 473,000 followers, Gabriela describes herself as a “lover of life. mermaid at heart.”

Gabriela is being held in California without bail, while Francisco waived extradition at his first appearance in a Florida courtroom on May 19, court records show. It’s not clear if either the father or daughter have entered a plea.
