Newly released jail calls involving Mackenzie Shirilla are drawing major attention online after the 21-year-old reportedly told her mother she does not believe she needs rehabilitation while discussing her future behind bars.
Shirilla is currently serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life following the 2022 crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend Davion Flanagan. Prosecutors argued during trial that she intentionally drove her car into a brick wall at nearly 100 mph, while her family continues to maintain the crash was caused by a medical emergency.
In the recorded phone call obtained by PEOPLE, Mackenzie and her mother discussed prison programs, visitation and what life could look like during her incarceration. When her mother explained that prison is designed to rehabilitate inmates, Mackenzie reportedly responded that she did not believe she personally needed rehabilitation.
The conversation later became emotional as Mackenzie expressed fears about aging in prison and potentially never having children or a family after release. She will become eligible for parole in 2037.
Public interest in the case has surged again following the release of Netflix’s documentary The Crash, which revisits the fatal incident and includes interviews with both Mackenzie’s family and the victims’ loved ones.
