Country singer Chase Matthew is facing one of the darkest moments of his career after a member of his touring band was arrested on disturbing abuse charges just hours after a festival performance.

According to reports, Carsen Richards — the 22-year-old bassist and music director for Matthew’s band — was taken into custody in Owensboro, Kentucky, shortly after performing at the BBQ & Barrels festival. Authorities say Richards is facing multiple felony charges involving the alleged sexual abuse of a minor.
And the details quickly shocked country music fans online.
Court records reportedly accuse Richards of offenses involving a child under 18, with allegations dating back to incidents in 2020 and 2022. Reports also state the alleged victim had been diagnosed with Autism Level 1.

The arrest happened immediately after the concert ended.
According to local authorities, police intentionally waited until Richards exited the stage before making the arrest in order to avoid creating panic in the middle of a crowded festival environment. Officials also stated they had concerns he could potentially be armed, leading officers to carefully plan the operation before taking him into custody near the tour buses.
As the news exploded online, Chase Matthew quickly released a public statement distancing himself from Richards and expressing disgust over the allegations.
“When I first heard the allegations, I was sick to my stomach,” Matthew said in part, adding that Richards had been immediately removed from the band and was no longer associated with his team in any capacity.
Fans online reacted with a mix of shock, anger, and disbelief, especially because Matthew has spent the last several years building momentum as one of country music’s fastest-rising younger stars.
For many supporters, the situation feels especially devastating because of how suddenly everything unfolded. Just hours earlier, Richards had reportedly been onstage performing in front of thousands of fans before officers moved in after the show ended.
The case has now become one of the most heavily discussed stories in country music circles this week, with social media flooded by reactions from fans trying to process the disturbing allegations and the speed at which the situation escalated publicly.
At this point, Richards remains in custody while the investigation continues. Authorities say the legal process is ongoing.
