Three-year-old Madeleine McCann has never been found after she went missing during her family holiday in Portugal. On the evening of May 3, 2007, she disappeared from her bedroom. Her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, realized she was missing close to midnight after returning from dining at a nearby rest

The couple was vacationing with their two other children, who were left unharmed. During the investigation, Portuguese law enforcement identified the parents as prime suspects, citing several inconsistencies and possible motives. Although Gerry and Kate were later cleared as suspects, Madeleineโ€™s case remains unsolved.

Theories Which Marked Gerry And Kate McCann As Suspects

The missing person case became more complex when Portuguese investigators located several DNA samples at the apartment. These included blood samples found both in the familyโ€™s vacation rental and in the car they used. Authorities believed some of the samples could have been linked to Madeleine.

A subsequent British analysis of the DNA led Portuguese police to theorize that Madeleine may not have disappeared but may have died, possibly as the result of an accident in the apartment that her parents allegedly tried to cover up. However, forensic experts later said the DNA test results were inconclusive.

Additionally, another key piece of evidence cited by investigators involved the reaction of sniffer dogs. The dogs were used during the investigation at the apartment, and reports stated that they detected the scent of death in certain areas. One of the locations was the family car, while another was an area behind a sofa.

Based on these findings and other investigative theories, the McCanns were named arguidos, or formal suspects, in the case.

Once the investigation shifted its focus toward Madeleineโ€™s parents, Gerry and Kate, authorities began examining several inconsistencies related to their disappearance accounts. Police and investigators allegedly focused on discrepancies in the coupleโ€™s statements, including differing accounts of how and when they returned to their apartment after dining with friends.

There was also the issue of translation stemming from a language barrier. Their statements in English were not recorded directly but were manually translated into Portuguese by a third-party interpreter.

Reports suggested that the police tried to utilize these loose ends and pushed a plea deal towards Kate McCann. They demanded that she confess to having accidentally killed her daughter as well as getting rid of her body by disposing of it.

She was even told that by doing so, she would fetch just about two years’ worth of jail time. Furthermore, Kate was also told that if she confessed to the crime, her husband Gerry would be permitted to walk free. But they refused to agree to any such plea deals.

Finally, since the case was heading nowhere close to being resolved, a major decision was taken. By July 2008, a Portuguese attorney general archived the entire case due to a lack of evidence. Moreover, Kate and Gerry were also cleared of the suspect list.

Aftermath Of Madeleine McCannโ€™s Disappearance

In 2023, Portuguese authorities issued a formal apology for the evident manhandling of the case. Senior detective Goncalo Amaral, who led the case, was promptly removed from the investigation.

Over the years, several possible suspects and theories related to the disappearance of the three-year-old child have surfaced. The case was never officially closed as authorities havenโ€™t yet found her body, since they presume her to be dead already. There have also been multiple speculations on Madeleineโ€™s assumed cause of death, which range from a burglary gone wrong to a planned abduction.

Lately, there have been multiple docu-series that have been released about the unresolved disappearance case of Madeleine McCann. The most recent book, Under Suspicion: Kate McCann, provided a dramatised version of Kateโ€™s testimony in the case.

The family has issued a statement, alleging that the makers never contacted them or asked for their consent before creating a series out of them. They remarked, โ€œWe are disappointed however, knowing that a Channel 5 โ€˜docu-๐’น๐“‡๐’ถ๐“‚๐’ถโ€™ will air tonight. We have not given, or been asked for, our consent and have had no involvement whatsoever in its making. We fail to see how it will help. Programmes like this, always have a negative impact on our family. โ€œ
